UK Diploma in Dialysis Technician One-year Course
What is Dialysis?
Dialysis is the process of removing waste and excess water from the blood through a machine. This can be done once or several times a week for people with kidney failure.
Dialysis may be used as a temporary measure or for life.
Dialysis is used most often in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD occurs when the kidneys become damaged over time due to high blood pressure, diabetes, or other factors.
The kidneys no longer work as they should and cause problems such as:
- High blood pressure
- Elevated levels of waste products in the blood (such as urea)
- Inability to filter out certain wastes from the blood (eg, albumin)
- Symptoms of CKD include fatigue and swelling in your feet and ankles that may feel like you have athlete’s foot.
- CKD also increases your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and kidney stones.
